Testimonials
Felt very well supported and everything was explained thoroughly and clearly. For example, in my very first oral surgery patient we had to cut flaps and remove bone which was very nerve racking, but with clear instructions he guided me through it. He allowed me to have plenty of practice myself after demonstrating the correct method and was very patient and understanding. Made my first MOS session enjoyable rather than nerve racking!
Anonymous
Dr. Ismail explained everything very well to us and the patient. I felt involved in the whole process and learnt a lot.

Anonymous
I learnt a lot from our MOS session, you took the time to explain things I was unsure of and showed me where to place my instruments/how to position myself but then let me have a go at it. This was great as I learn best from practicing the theory we are taught and you gave me lots of supported opportunities to do this.
Anonymous
The session went well. It was really helpful for you to demonstrate parts for us before doing them ourselves.

I enjoyed the session, thank you.
Anonymous
Felt confident to try new things due to how supportive and calm Hassan was. I learn best through observation and then trying and felt that I was able to really learn a lot!
Anonymous
I felt very involved throughout the session, even the cases where I wasn’t as directly involved I felt the little comments throughout the treatment made me felt involved. Talking through patients radiographs was very helpful, and in particular the points about ID nerve and association with roots was very useful to be told.Really helpful discussion about topics related to oral surgery and patient communication. Even if there are fewer patients booked in, the time on clinics was used wisely for discussion of interesting topics. The drawing and the quiz really made me think what I would do as a clinician for patient management. I hope this can be continued for the rest of the year at the end of our session to improve our knowledge and skills.
Anonymous
Really enjoyed the session with Hassan as he taught very thoroughly and was empathetic to me & patient when teaching.
Anonymous
The session was very well structured. Good use of teamwork to divide up the tasks and give everyone experience whilst being efficient and reassuring patient. Encouragement of decision making and problem solving before getting the patient in was good. Very interactive, informative clear and allowed for questions and participation without judgement. The way we were guided and tips given allowed for better understanding and confidence. Feedback at the end of the session was valuable.

Session went really well thought I learnt a lot and the teaching style was very helpful.

Despite not being able to treat this session due to booking issues, Dr Hasan made the session extremely useful by explaining concepts that we have learnt in lectures more simply, enabling effective communication with future patients. Furthermore, I was able to observe an XLA today and review the positioning, instrument handling, choice of cryers elevators when extracting multirooted teeth. I thought Hassan managed the clinic well and proactively engaged in teaching opportunities which were not only informative but enjoyable.
Anonymous
The tutor guided me into the appropriate handling of using luxators and cryers as well as how to position myself for maximum vision and power by first demonstrating it to me when removing retained roots, and then allowing for me to attempt. This was a very good learning experience for me, and i feel that i was able to take a lot from this session.
Anonymous
Very helpful session for me to get involved in suturing, interpreting CBCT, discussing red flag signs for impacted last molars. The tutor explained things really well, simple and easy to understand. Plenty of opportunity for me to test my knowledge and understanding.

Moreover, Dr. Hassan’s guidance extended to the realm of differential diagnosis concerning cystic presentations in radiographic images. He provided in-depth insights into the key diagnostic indicators to look for when distinguishing various types of cysts, such as odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts, which has significantly improved my diagnostic skills. Additionally, our discussions delved into the intricacies of flap design in oral surgery. Dr. Hassan not only explained the rationale behind choosing different flap designs but also emphasized the significance of factors like vascularity, tissue preservation, and minimizing post-operative complications. I particularly appreciated his explanation of why flap designs for the removal of wisdom teeth typically extend slightly beyond the mucogingival junction, as it shed light on the surgical principles that contribute to successful outcomes in these procedures.

I found this session extremely helpful and I learnt a lot of theory behind why specific techniques / instruments are used. For example I now comprehend why mandibular molar forceps have 2 beaks whereas maxillary molar forceps only have one. I learnt why lidocaine is used for maxillary molars whereas articaine is better for mandibular molar extractions due to the thickness of the bone. I learnt a lot through observation and tell, show, do. Talking through each process before I got a chance to carry any treatment out was also very helpful. I was very involved in each process, even with those I didn’t do (such as the sutures) and as I didn’t get to do a suture in a patient I was able to practice on a model in order to better understand the technique. I need to work on my hand placement and positioning. I also need to revise how different pathologies presents orally so I can diagnose and understand the aetiology of any pathology before constructing a treatment plan. Incision biopsies consist of removing a segment of the area to be studies and aid in diagnosis. I observed an incision biopsy today of some hyperkeratosis which was most probably due to trauma from the LL8. Excision biopsies consist of removing the whole area of pathology, for example if a polyp is present. Overall I really enjoyed this session and got a lot out of it. The session has highlighted areas which I need to work more on.

Discussions pre and post op made me feel well informed and part of the patient’s care. Dr Ismail explained what he was doing throughout and made it really simple to understand complex treatment.
Anonymous
I really enjoyed the session as Hassan was very clear in his explanations and diagrams. It was also good that when extracting teeth or suturing, he demonstrated the technique first and talked through it before letting me try. Also took the time to answer any questions that I had.
Anonymous
I really enjoyed this session i felt very involved and everything was explained to me throughout and after was very useful and helpful.
Anonymous
I think Hassan was excellent, explained everything well, tested my knowledge and helped me build on my knowledge.

I like how the tutor went the extra mile to draw stuff out on the whiteboard when we asked questions. I felt his questions and probing were challenging but appropriate given the stage we are at in dental school right now. I know the stuff he has taught me and probed me about today will stick in the future!
Anonymous
I really like Dr. Hassan’s method of teaching, particularly how we reflect towards the end of the session on what went well/what could be improved.
Anonymous
Explained the treatment very well, empathetic and effective with time management. Kept cool during somewhat difficult treatment.

I had another session today with Hassan managing two patients and extracting teeth. I was not so confident when I first met Hassan with extractions as I didn’t have a lot of experience, but listening to his honest and insightful advice has really changed my technique. These are skills that I anticipate that I will take into my FD year and beyond. Undergrads like me also have to sit oral surgery progessional cases. Hassan spent time with me after the session going through it, and encouraged me in ways of how to be better. He’s gone above and beyond to support me by providing constructive criticism so I become more confident. I’ve had the pleasure to assist Hassan on Minor Oral Surgery clinics too, and I was surprised by the amount of care and consideration he gave to an elderly patient with a complex medical history who was very nervous. He was very compassionate, and technically brilliant. His anaesthetic technique was brilliant, and taught me a lot about how to manage anxious patients. Above all, he was happy to explain the cases to me so I could learn what was going on too. I’ve had an extremely good experience with Hassan as my tutor and fingers crossed, there are more opportunities to learn from him. I appreciate one of the learning objectives today was for me to be more concise when presenting cases, but credit is due where credit is due. He’s always happy to help and he is known by students (and other staff who have discussed this!) that he is a fantastic registrar, and will go very far in his future career. Thank you so much Hassan, keep up the good work and stay motivated! Good luck with everything you’re doing 🙂

It was really useful to see how to adapt for visibility such as getting the patient to close their mouth after opening when treating third molars.
Anonymous
Was good to hear specific advice regarding sedation. This included how it was done and ethos to manage patients. It was good to also hear about dentistry more generally and other techniques such as in oral surgery. It was good to have the opportunity to ask questions on both.
